What separates the people who get in shape and stay that way from those who are trapped in a cycle of yo-yo dieting and ever-worsening health? Is it that the first group are just more determined? That's part of it, but the truth is there are a few common elements your weight loss programme needs to cover if it's going to be successful, no matter how determined you are.
Anyone who's managed to lose a substantial amount of weight and keep it off for good (that's the important bit) will have followed a plan that shares ALL of the 5 traits below, no exceptions. If you've been trying to lose weight and it hasn't worked out for you, chances are your weight loss programme was missing one of these elements:
1. A Realistic Goal
There's nothing wrong with aiming to be the leanest, best version of yourself, but it's important to be realistic about how much you can lose and how fast you can lose it. Rapid weight loss through extreme dieting is neither safe nor sustainable, so aim for a more reasonable weight reduction over a longer period of time. As a very general rule of thumb, shifting 1-2% of your overall body weight each week is ideal.
2. 100% Commitment
You didn't gain weight overnight, and you won't lose it that quickly either. So you'll need to be 100% committed in order to stay on track with your weight loss programme. Does this mean you can never have any hiccups? Of course not — life throws us curveballs all the time. But being 100% committed means you get right back on the wagon as soon as possible and keep going until you've seen your goals through.
3. The Right Exercise
Physical activity is a huge part of any weight loss programme, but it's not enough to just slog away for hours on the treadmill every week. We see people taking this approach all the time, only to become frustrated with the lack of results and feelings of constant hunger and deprivation. Getting in shape is not necessarily about working HARDER in the gym, but working SMARTER, as our clients find out when they join us.
4. The Right Diet
They say you can't outrun a bad diet, and it's true. No matter how vigilant you are at the gym, poor eating habits can derail even the best weight loss efforts. And this doesn't just include junk food — many of the fad diets people are following these days can be equally counterproductive. We prefer to have our clients follow a balanced low-GL (glycemic load) diet that delivers all the nutrients they need for good health and effective weight loss.
5. Help & Support
Nobody who has managed to lose weight and keep it off got there by themselves. They had the help of mentors, coaches and friends to guide them and keep them going along the way. As personal trainers, this is exactly what we do. We show you how to set the right goals for your own circumstances, provide accountability to keep you on track, and show you how to eat and exercise effectively for safe, lasting results. Don't be an island — reach out and get the right help, and you'll be much more likely to succeed.
